Old Timers

Billy and I go way back, We first met when we were members of Hook & Ladder #1 in HFD, when he asked me about the ten Sheriff's Dept. and the County Jail. I told him they were hiring new deputies and a few weeks later he showed up at the Jail for work. That was the beginning of many years of working together. One incident that stands out was during a large snow storm when many roads were closed, we hitched a ride from the Harrison PD to Greenburgh PD who got us to the Westchester Community College in Valhalla. There along with Warden Bill Phimister we walked through deep snow to the Jail to releive officers. These were truly the "old days". No overtime pay and you stayed as long as required and we slept in F-Unt at the Pen. Our pay in 1965 was $5700. a year PERIOD, NO OVERTIME, NO HOLIDAY PAY, and you worked "at the pleasure of the Sheriff".And NO training, its was all "on the job". The good old days were never good old days. Rest in peace old friend.
