Our Mission
Kensico Cemetery was organized as a rural cemetery corporation on January 19, 1889. It’s mission, then and now, is to sell lots and graves to the public for the purpose of burial of the human dead and to maintain the grounds in memory of all those buried. Every service provided is cemetery related which includes opening graves for interments, general cemetery maintenance, special cemetery care and the installation of foundations for memorials. We are, by law, independent of funeral directors and memorial dealers and do not offer their services. Our focus is simple, cemetery service and cemetery care.

Regulated By
Kensico Cemetery is a non-sectarian, not-for-profit membership corporation. The statutory law regulating our operation is found in the New York State Not-For-Profit Corporation Law which vests jurisdiction in a Cemetery Board consisting of the Secretary of State, the Attorney General, the Commissioner of Health and the Director of the Division of Cemeteries. Rules, regulations and charges for service rendered are subject to approval by the State Cemetery Board. Lot prices are set by the Board of Directors and are posted and filed with the Division of Cemeteries.

Managed By
The Board of Directors has the general management and control over the affairs of the Cemetery. Their job is to achieve the interest of its members in perpetuating a successful, financially sound organization. The Board of Directors determines the strategic direction of the organization, assures compliance of the mission and, in the process, ensures the current and future economic success of the organization. The Board of Directors creates, approves and monitors management policies and decisions. The Board Of Directors has working committees that report to the Board. They assist and guide Cemetery Managers for planning orderly growth, establishing budgets and directing the Cemetery operation.

Committed To
For more than a century of caring, the Board of Directors, Committee Members, Officers, and Employees of the Cemetery are needed to staff and operate the Cemetery seven days a week, 52 weeks a year; They represent the lot owner; past, present and future by planning, developing and creating an attractive and comfortable environment in order to pay tribute and honor all those buried.

Throughout its more than 100 years of history, Kensico has responded to the needs and preferences of lot owners: the Community Mausoleum was built in 1924 to offer above-ground burials; Sharon Gardens was established in 1953 as a special section dedicated for families of the Jewish faith; monument and memorial park areas were created to provide more options to the public; Angel's Rest was developed to memorialize the burial of infants, and, most recently, a Niche Room was established in the Community Mausoleum for the permanent safe-keeping of cremains.
