Obituary for Edward J. Valdez Sr.

Edward Valdez Sr., 85 of Mahopac, passed away peacefully on Sunday May 29, 2022 at home surrounded by family.

Born in Port Chester to Anthony Valdez and Delores Merritt, he was one of four children. Edward completed the 9th grade in school and then began working and helping to support his family. Edward served proudly in the Navy on the USS Wisconsin from 1955 through 1957. On a blind date in 1956, Edward met the love of his life and his best friend, Nancy Birdsell, they were married in 1958 and shared 64 happy years together. They raised six children together as a team and were also blessed with ten grandchildren, one great grandchild and two more on the way.

Edward was a patrolman for the Port Chester Police Department for twenty years prior to his retirement. He loved helping people in his role and was uniquely suited for this because of his even tempered disposition. He could often diffuse difficult situations by just talking with people and took great pride in this. Edward received several commendations and awards during his tenure with the PD, as well as numerous letters from people he helped.

Edward was a very devoted family man and loved nothing more than spending time with and being surrounded by his family. He had a fantastic sense of humor and always enjoyed good natured joking around. He was an avid NY Giants and NY Mets fan.

Edward is survived by his loving wife Nancy, his sister Delores Spano and brother Leonard Valdez, His son Edward Valdez Jr. and his wife Debbie, daughter Terri Crane and her husband Roger, daughter Delores Hall and her husband Wes, daughter Nancy Valdez-Swack and her husband Lawrence, son James Valdez and his wife Heather and his son Robert Valdez and his wife Margaret. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren David Crane, Steven Crane, Anthony Valdez, Nicholas Valdez, Alyssa Valdez, Tyler Hall, Justin Valdez, Maegan Valdez, Caitlin Valdez and Landon Valdez as well as his grand-dog Jazz. He is also survived by his great granddaughter Skylar Valdez.

He was predeceased by his parents and recently his brother Frederick Valdez whom we imagine is welcoming him warmly in heaven.
