María de Miranda

I’ve been thinking over the last couple of days how to best pay tribute to Nani here and grandpa’s face keeps popping up in my mind. So I would like to thank them both for so much. I came to New York when I was 23 and they welcomed me into their home. Grandpa drove me to my first interview in Spanish Harlem-we were both scared though he wouldn’t admit it. He helped me find an “A to B” car and explained in great detail how I was to pump my foot off and on the gas pedal to get the car started in the winter. And after every phrase he would add “you get me?”. Nani taught me how to make italian sauce from scratch and how to fold the laundry. They helped me find an apt. in Park Ave. and grandpa hooked me up with an interview in White Plains. In that job I met two very special lifetime friends. And when little Bryan had a very high fever they came in the middle of the night to help me put him in a tub full of very cold water. Nani gave me a ride home from the train station in her pijamas at 1 a.m. when, returning from a concert in the city, I found the taxis station was closed-an ankle injury prevented me from walking home. She also drove me to urgent care when I cut the tip of my finger off and couldn’t reach Bryan. Later on grandpa, Nani, Bryan and I met often for dinner at the Mamaroneck Diner or Sophia’s and in time Sabrina joined us. So wherever the two of you are, thank you for all the help, all the caring, the love and the laughter. You made my world a better place and now I get to be “Nani” for Luca and Nico. Passing on the love.....
