Obituary for Michael Joseph Corcoran

Michael Joseph Corcoran
Michael Joseph Corcoran—loving husband, devoted father, and noble champion for his family—died peacefully September 10, 2019 surrounded by his loving wife and sons after a valiant fight against cancer. After his melanoma had metastasized, Michael continued to share optimism and hope. He proudly took his youngest son to college to begin what he called “his great adventure” and looked forward to attending his lacrosse games at MIT in the spring. He was taken from his family far too soon and his memory will be kept alive by his adoring wife of 39 years, Mimi Clarke Corcoran, and his children, Michael Joseph Corcoran, Jr. (fiancée Vanessa Cocks), Ethan Randolph Corcoran, Alexander Clarke Corcoran, and Edmund “Teddy” St. Clair Corcoran.

Born January 1, 1956, in Cambridge, Massachusetts to William and Helen Corcoran, Michael grew up in Cambridge and spent his summers on Cape Cod. He graduated from Phillips Academy Andover and Yale University where he played both lacrosse and football. He earned his MBA from Harvard Business School and after graduation worked in commodities at several prominent firms trading coffee, cocoa, and later electricity.

Michael was an avid runner, huge enthusiast of the Grateful Dead, and ardent advocate for his family. He loved sharing in his children’s lives and cherished his time with them—proudly attending all of their athletic and academic events. His strength and compassion were never more evident than when he cared for his son, Alex, encouraging him and delighting in his many milestones.

In addition to his wife and children, Michael is survived by his brother Robert Corcoran (Mary), and sister, Karen Van Winkle (Richard Games) and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, William Corcoran.

The family wishes to thank the medical staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital and the critical care doctors and nurses who provided compassionate care to both Michael and his family. Friends are invited to celebrate Michael’s life at 11am, Saturday September 21, 2019 at the Church of the Resurrection (910 Boston Post Rd, Rye, NY 10580).
"In lieu of flowers, contributions in Michael’s memory may be sent to The Center for Discovery, which provides services for children and adults with severe disabilities (https://thecenterfordiscovery.org/)."
